Antonio Rodríguez de Hita. Misa O gloriosa Virginum | LAU009

Antonio Rodríguez de Hita (1722-1787), who was born in Madrid, stands out among the Spanish composers and theorists of the 18th century. He is recognised for promoting the zarzuela de costumbres alongside the playwright Ramón de la Cruz. However, most of his music is religious and was composed for the Royal Monastery of La Encarnación in Madrid, where he was chapelmaster from 1765 to 1787. Previously, he held the same position in the collegiate church of Alcalá de Henares and the cathedral of Palencia. Of the fifteen masses that have survived, Albert Recasens selected the Missa in Conceptione Beatae Mariae Virginis (1771) for eight voices and orchestra, which was composed in 1771 for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December. Rodríguez de Hita composed this piece based on the melody of the Hispanic-origin hymn O gloriosa Virginum. As with much of the religious repertoire of 18^(th)-century Spain, elements of the polychoral tradition coexist with typical features of pre-classicism in this piece. This mass is a significant example of the eclecticism that was prevalent in Spanish churches at the time. The diatonic-chromatic-enharmonic scale (1751) is another topic that he has addressed in another selection, La Grande Chapelle, in LAU 005 (2006). Juan Carlos Asensio (Schola Antiqua) is responsible for the plainchant. The aim is not to recreate ancient ceremonies exactly, but rather to provide a didactic format. Some litanies of the Virgin and the Salve Regina complete the offering. This world premiere recording is of enormous musical and musicological interest as it is one of the few examples of Antonio Rodríguez de Hita's vocal music. He was a key figure in the history of 18th century Spanish music. The album is part of the Poetic Music record collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
