Carlos Patiño. Sacred music for the court | LAU021

For more than thirty years, Carlos Patiño was master of the Spanish Royal Chapel at the service of Philip IV. Not only did the Spanish monarch hold him in great esteem, but also João IV of Portugal, who collected his works for the famous LivrariaIn 1634, following the retirement of Mateo Romero, Patiño became the first non-Franco-Flemish choirmaster at the Spanish Habsburg court. Trained in the cathedral tradition under the tutelage of Alonso Lobo in Seville, he developed his own musical style, combining an interest in counterpoint with the use of polychoral music. From his extensive Latin vocal corpus, widely disseminated in the main ecclesiastical centers of Spain and the Americas, Albert Recasens and La Grande Chapelle have selected some gems. The selection of pieces, many of them dedicated to the Virgin Mary, highlights the quality and originality of Patiño's works, while revealing a fascinating amalgamation of techniques always used to underscore the rhetoric of the text. The recording is part of the Poetic Music collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

The world's first recording.
