Cristóbal Galán. Song of the soul. Works in Latin and romance | LAU010

This is the first recorded monograph of one of the most important Spanish 17th-century composers: Cristóbal Galán, who was the chapel master at the Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales in Madrid (1667–1680) and at the Spanish Royal Chapel (1680–1684) during the reign of Charles II. Galán is one of the key figures in Spanish music of the second half of the 17^(th) century, yet his works are rarely performed in concerts. Following a period in Cagliari (Sardinia), he appeared as a musician at the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid in 1660, participating in the renowned performances of comedies and zarzuelas that enlivened the festivities during the reign of Philip IV. In 1664, he was appointed chapel master at Segovia Cathedral, a position he held until 1667. At the express request of Queen Regent Mariana of Austria, the widow of Philip IV, Galán moved to Madrid to run the music school of the Convent of Las Descalzas Reales. He then entered the service of His Majesty in the Royal Chapel. Galán collaborated with the great playwrights of the court, including Juan Bautista Diamante, Antonio de Solís, and Pedro Calderón de la Barca, setting comedies, royal celebrations, zarzuelas, and autos sacramentales to music. However, most of his extensive body of work is religious and was predominantly written for two choirs and continuo. In this, he contrasts the exuberance of the refrain, with its contrapuntal games and expressive audacity, with the melodic simplicity of the verses. Galán was one of the main adapters of modern Italian techniques to traditional Hispanic genres. This double CD contains a selection of the composer's finest religious works in Latin and Spanish, including solos, duets, quartets and carols. These pieces have been brought back to life through rigorous research into the original sources and historically informed performances by La Grande Chapelle. This ambitious musicological recovery project, one of the most significant in Spain in recent years, is the result of months of archival and musicological research by the Consolidated Research Group ‘Aula Música Poética’ (University of Barcelona, CSIC and Lauda Música). The album is part of the Poetic Music record collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
