The Great Seducer. Music for the Don Juan myth | LAU006

The Great Seducer was conceived as a tribute to Tirso de Molina, whose masterpiece 'El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra' (The Trickster of Seville and the Stone Guest) introduced one of literature's most enduring myths: the story of Don Juan. This tale has captivated playwrights and artists alike, inspiring Lorenzo Da Ponte and Mozart to create their renowned opera, Don Giovanni. This work reimagines one of the most significant pieces of classical Spanish theatre in a novel way. A musical journey illustrates the development of the dramatic action of Don Juan. Using a scientific and interdisciplinary methodology that has already been successfully applied to other works, the “Poetic Music” research team, comprising philologist Lola Josa and musicologist Mariano Lambea, both from the University of Barcelona and the CSIC respectively, have poetically and musically illustrated the most significant passages of Tirso's universal drama. Don Juan is presented through the key moments of his story: his four conquests — the noblewomen Isabela and Doña Ana, and the commoners Tisbea and Aminta — how love is experienced by him and by them, his arrogance as a seducer, and his emergence as the new Aeneas. The aim is to follow the journey of the myth and give voice and music to each of the protagonists. To illustrate Tirso's verses, music by some of the most inspired Baroque composers has been used, including Cristóbal Galán, Juan Hidalgo, Bernardo Murillo, Manuel Correa and Manuel de Egüés, as well as the inevitable anonymous composers. Many of the compositions are unpublished and most are world premiere recordings. This album showcases the diversity of the 17th century Spanish repertoire, featuring pieces of profound lyricism performed by sopranos Cyrille Gerstenhaber and Marisa Martins, as well as instrumental interludes by Trabaci and Macque, who were chapel masters in Naples – where the action begins. The album also features popular rhythms and dances, and concludes with Galán's magnificent 12-voice Dies Irae sequence. In his latest recording, Ángel Recasens offers emotional and elegant interpretations that seek dramatic intent and proportionality, transforming a practically unknown repertoire into enduring works. The album is part of the Poetic Music recording collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
