Francesc Valls. Misa Scala Aretina | LAU014

Works for the Chapel of Barcelona Cathedral. Valls' Scala Aretina Mass is considered one of the most important works in Spanish musical history. Written in the polyphonic tradition and based on Guido of Arezzo's hexachord — hence the name — it was composed for Barcelona Cathedral, possibly to celebrate the closing of the Catalan Parliament in January 1702. Its fame stems from the heated aesthetic controversy surrounding one of its passages, involving more than 50 musicians including Alessandro Scarlatti, against the backdrop of the War of the Spanish Succession (1700–1714). La Grande Chapelle has taken on the fascinating challenge of rediscovering this unique work according to the original score, treating us to a selection of excellent, previously unpublished pieces from Valls's vast musical output. The album is part of the Poetic Music record collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
