José de Nebra. Vespers of Confessors | LAU004

José de Nebra (1702-1768) is, without a doubt, the key figure in Spanish music in the middle decades of the 18th century. He worked at the Capilla Real, where he held the position of first organist, first organist, and vice-master from 1751. From the 1820s onwards, he composed numerous zarzuelas for the municipal theatres of Madrid and was appreciated for his pedagogical work. The fire at the Alcázar in Madrid, and of almost all of the musical archives of the Capilla Real, in 1734, gave him the opportunity to devote himself to religious production, mainly intended, as was common practice, for double choir with instrumental accompaniment. Hence the uniqueness of his Vísperas del Común de los Santos y de la Virgen (1759), composed a cappella for a small four-voice arrangement. This is a collection of psalms and a Magnificat for the Vespers Office, which Nebra had copied, luxuriously bound and sent to the most important Spanish cathedrals and, in addition, to the Sistine Chapel. On this occasion, La Grande Chapelle and the Schola Antiqua have reconstructed one of the possible offices, that of the Vespers of the Common of Confessors (not Pontiffs). In addition to the structural elements that mark the liturgy, the alternating practice of plainchant, polyphony and "verses" for organ has been used for the psalmody. All the music is unpublished and comes from the archives of the Royal Palace, Santiago de Compostela and El Escorial, in what constitutes a world first recording. In his Vespers, Nebra consciously uses an austere traditional style, foreign to the rest of his production. Overall, the serenity, nakedness and beauty of the melodic lines stand out. The interpretation of La Grande Chapelle is captivating due to the impeccable transparency of its lines and the wide range of nuances. The search for expressiveness, always with absolute respect for the content of the text, the balance and the neatness are the hallmarks of Ángel Recasens. The delicacy and exquisiteness of this version brings us face to face with astonishment one of the geniuses of the Spanish 18th century.
