Juan García de Salazar. In Dominica Palmarum | LAU011

This is a reconstruction of the procession and mass of the Palm Sunday festivities in Zamora. Juan García de Salazar, who was from Álava and trained in Burgos, was appointed chapel master at Zamora Cathedral after serving in the same role at the Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor in Toro and at the Cathedral of Burgo de Osma (Soria). He remained in his post until his death in 1710, after a forty-two-year career. La Grande Chapelle has recorded the music for the Palm Sunday ceremony by the composer from Álava. The chosen programme reconstructs the procession, the Mass and part of the Vespers service for this liturgical feast, featuring the characteristic alternation of polyphonic passages, plainchant and pieces performed by minstrels. The choir books from Zamora Cathedral dating from the 17^(th) and 18^(th) centuries have been used for this project, and Prof. Juan Carlos Asensio, a regular collaborator with the ensemble, was responsible for locating and selecting them. Interest in reviving the Palm Sunday procession stems from the fact that several of Salazar's motets for that day have been preserved in Zamora Cathedral. Another significant musical highlight is the Passion according to St Matthew, composed by Salazar in polyphony. This is a valuable work, as there are very few recordings of Passions on the market. The reconstruction of the festival concludes with the Vespers hymn 'Vexilla Regis', sung during the 'Vexilla' (or 'banner') ceremony, in which the sacred banner of the cross was raised. This has been achieved through the restoration of the musical manuscripts (preserved in Zamora and Burgos) and the use of musical instruments similar to those used by the cadre of Zamora Cathedral at the end of the 17th century. The pursuit of fidelity and rigorous sound evocation is characteristic of La Grande Chapelle and its director, Albert Recasens. This album pays tribute to García de Salazar on the third centenary of his death (1710–2010), while also aiming to continue disseminating Spain's rich musical heritage to our society through the ambitious recovery of the historical and musical heritage of Castile and León.
