Juan Hidalgo. Music for the Planet King | LAU015

Juan Hidalgo (1614–1685) is remembered today almost exclusively as the creator, in collaboration with Calderón de la Barca, of the Spanish operatic genre of the zarzuela. However, his vocal chamber music, which was mainly written in "human" and "divine" tones, was undeniably successful in its day. This is evidenced by the numerous manuscript copies that circulated in Spain and America. His position as harpist of the Royal Chapel and master of the Royal Chamber in the service of Philip IV and Charles II placed him in a privileged position within the artistic landscape of his time. His religious repertoire, composed mainly for certain devotional practices at court such as the 'Forty Hours', is less well known and probably disappeared in the fire that ravaged the Royal Alcázar in 1734. However, some of the sacred works have been restored from copies found scattered throughout different libraries and archives. In this monographic recording – the first of its kind – La Grande Chapelle has brought together a varied selection of tones and carols which delight us and fill an important gap in our knowledge of the Spanish Baroque. The disc is one of the recordings in the Poetic Music collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
