Between Adventures and Enchantments. Music for Don Quixote | LAU001
This recording presents a selection of music, divided into two main sections. Firstly, music familiar to Don Quixote: music prior to 1605 with verses from old romances. As is well known, Cervantes's character is an anachronistic knight living in a literary world anchored in times past. For this reason, Cervantes includes references to archaic music in certain passages of his novel. Secondly, it includes music that Alonso Quijano and Cervantes himself would have listened to: music from the early decades of the 17th century. The thread of Cervantes' narrative is taken up, incorporating passages that allow for the inclusion of music and verses of various kinds. These were collected in the poetic-musical songbooks of the time, such as the Turin Musical Songbook, Romances y Letras a Tres Voces, the Cancionero Poético-Musical Hispánico de Lisboa, the Cancionero de la Sablonara, and the Libro de Tonos Humanos. These songbooks contain an excellent repertoire of lyrical romances and lyrics for singing. Of particular interest to today's listeners are the poems written by Cervantes himself that punctuate Don Quixote's discourse and were never set to music. Dr Lola Josa (University of Barcelona) and Dr Mariano Lambea (CSIC) have selected and adapted these poems using the contrafactum technique, based on an old custom of the time in which poems were sung to the tune of popular songs. At the same time, other poems by Jorge Manrique, Garcilaso de la Vega, Lope de Vega and Luis de Góngora, with the corresponding music, illustrate certain episodes of Cervantes' narrative. Finally, the instrumental repertoire of the period is not forgotten on this journey through Don Quixote and the religious music of the time is delved into Miserere mei, Domine by Mateo Romero and Super flumina Babylonis by Tomás Luis de Victoria, both with direct reference to the corresponding passage in Cervantes' great work.
