In the early 17th century, the court in Brussels experienced extraordinary cultural splendour under the rule of Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia. This period of peace and prosperity in the southern Netherlands was under the Spanish Habsburgs. The sovereigns were great collectors and patrons of artists such as Brueghel de Velours and Rubens, and they maintained a magnificent musical chapel with musicians from Spain, Italy and England. It was in this context that Pedro Ruimonte, a native of Zaragoza and chamber master to the Archdukes, created his masterpiece, Parnaso español (1614), which represents a milestone in the history of Hispanic music. This album recreates the chapel's and the Archdukes' chamber's soundscapes, characterised by variety of styles and genres, and an innovative spirit. The musicological recovery project was carried out with the Leonardo Grant for Researchers and Cultural Creators from the BBVA Foundation. The album is part of the Música Poética record collection from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
