Alonso Lobo. Misas Prudentes virgines – Beata Dei genitrix | LAU013

These are two works from Liber primus missarum (1602), written for the service at Toledo Cathedral during El Greco's time. Both his contemporaries and later generations recognised Alonso Lobo as one of the greatest masters of Spanish polyphony. A favourite disciple and assistant of Francisco Guerrero in Seville, Lobo was the only musician of his time to hold the position of chapel master at both the Seville and Toledo cathedrals, which were at the pinnacle of the Spanish ecclesiastical system. His Liber primus missarum (1602) was hugely popular in Spain and the New World. Of the six masses in the print, La Grande Chapelle has selected Prudentes virgines and Beata Dei genitrix, two masses that are not yet available in modern editions. Based on Guerrero's motets of the same name, Lobo exploits erudite imitative techniques such as enigmatic canons and bold harmonic and expressive resources with unparalleled mastery. Some consider these techniques to be similar to those of El Greco, a contemporary artist active in Toledo. The album is part of the Poetic Music record collection of theSpanish National Research Council (CSIC).
