Antonio Soler. Vocal work in Latin | LAU018

Antonio Soler was the most internationally renowned Spanish composer of the 18th century. He is renowned for his celebrated harpsichord sonatas and chamber music. However, he also has an extensive vocal repertoire, the result of over thirty years at the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, where he was organist and chapel master. This CD brings together a selection of Latin compositions written for two choirs and an instrumental ensemble, some of which are unpublished. Based on the technical procedure of polychorality, these works feature impressive choral sections with homophonic or contrapuntal textures, as well as numbers for soloists of a cantabile or virtuoso nature that draw closer to theatrical language. They demonstrate a mastery of an admirable stylistic spectrum. This pioneering initiative enables us to appreciate the boundless imagination and mastery of voice treatment of the great Catalan musician, as well as his wide range of expressive resources. The album is part of the Música Poética record collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
