It is unusual for La Grande Chapelle to dedicate two albums to the same musician. However, the importance of Carlos Patiño's long career as a composer in the service of the Spanish court justifies a second look at his work. As well as writing vocal works in Latin, Patiño explored various musical genres in Spanish, primarily tonos and villancicos, which were composed to entertain at court or for devotional purposes in the Royal Chapel. This album brings together small-scale pieces, generally for four voices with basso continuo, characterised by their rhythmic richness and intimate relationship with the poetic text. This album is an essential document for delving deeper into Patiño's work and for introducing listeners to the lesser-known music of the Golden Age of Hispanic arts and letters.
This album is the result of research that Albert Recasens has developed at the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra and is part of the Poetic Music discography collection by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
