Music for Lent.
The fame and influence of Cristóbal de Morales was enormous in his time. More than seventy printed before 1600 collect some of his compositions. The work of the musician from Seville was not only an essential part of the repertoire of the most important churches and cathedrals in Spain and America until the end of the Modern Age, but also enjoyed extraordinary prestige among theorists and historians. While in Spain he only had short stays in cathedrals and chapels, his name is associated with the decade he spent in the pontifical chapel of Paul III, from 1535 to 1545. In Rome, he carried out his work as a cantor with colleagues of the stature of Costanzo Festa, Jacques Arcadelt and Juan Escribano. Morales was especially interested in the Lenten texts, which include the celebrations of Ash Wednesday and the Sundays of Septuagesima, Sexagesima and Quinquagesima. From its extensive series of motets for that liturgical season, La Grande Chapelle pays tribute to one of the great composers of all time.
