Tomas Luis de Victoria. The Easter celebrations in Piazza Navona | LAU012

Since 1579, the Brotherhood of the Resurrection of St. Giacomo degli Spagnoli – the national church of Castile in Rome – has organised the Easter celebrations in Piazza Navona. These were among the most splendid public celebrations during the period of Spanish supremacy in Italy. For the solemn procession that took place before dawn, the square was adorned with temporary structures and allegorical scenes, illuminated by fireworks and accompanied by music performed by the city's finest singers, who performed from boxes or joined the procession. Unsurprisingly, the procession was organised to symbolise the hegemony of the Spanish nation and to serve as a powerful propaganda tool. Tomás Luis de Victoria, a member of the brotherhood, was involved in the procession before returning to Spain in 1585. This double CD is the first to evoke the music that may have been performed in the church and around the square during this important Roman festival. It features a highly varied selection of vocal and instrumental works by composers who were involved in organising the festival, such as Francisco Soto and Ruggiero Giovanelli, or whose music was preserved in the archives of S. Giacomo degli Spagnoli, including Jacobus de Kerle, Giovanni P. da Palestrina, Giovanni Animuccia, Rocco Rodio and Francisco Guerrero. In addition to offering a new interpretation of Victoria, this superb recreation immerses us in the sounds that would have been familiar to him during his final period in Rome: from sumptuous polyphonic works reminiscent of Venice to the simple laude spirituali of the San Felipe Neri oratory. In short, this is another first for La Grande Chapelle, which contextualises one of the greatest composers of the Spanish Renaissance. The album is part of the Poetic Music record collection of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
