The Forty Hours Devotion is a mysterious practice involving the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the altar for as long as Christ remained in the tomb. In Spain, this extraordinary three-day prayer included siestas, during which vocal chamber works interspersed with instrumental pieces were sung. Focusing on the music of Sebastián Durón, this album recreates the sound of one of these siestas using sources from cathedrals and the particular sonority of bajoncillos. It mainly includes tones and carols whose popular texts are a wonderful mixture of candour and sophistication. The composer's art lies in expressing religious and secular emotion in the same way: we are in church and, at the same time, in the midst of nature, as in a poem by St Francis of Assisi. The album is part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) collection Poetic Music.
