The flight of Icarus. Music for baroque eros | LAU003

There is no period in the history of world literature in which more and better has been written about love than in the Golden Age, and within this period, Spanish Baroque poetry is the one that, exceptionally, takes its expression to the extreme. The most inspired Spanish poets were able to write the most moving verses about this human constant. They often chose the lyrical figure of Icarus, the young son of Daedalus who flew too close to the sun after ignoring his father's advice, melting the wax on his wings and falling into the sea — turning his flight of freedom into death. Icarus was one of the quintessential myths of Baroque sensibility; with this mythological allusion, the poets referred to man's entire destiny in arguments about love: the rise and fall. The succession of images and memories of the myth must therefore be understood metaphorically: the lady is the sun, desire is the wings, and the poetic self is the new Icarus who, in this flight of love, dares to seek the lady's favour. However, she plunges him into despair and the death of love with her cruel disdain. Like the poets, the most renowned and prestigious Spanish composers of the time, who were active in the courts of Philip III and Philip IV, were attracted to this theme, offering their musical inspiration to the most beautiful poems. Alongside the inevitable anonymous composers, this recording features the works of Manuel Correa, Bernardo Murillo, Sebastián Durón, Mateo Romero (Maestro Capitán) and Manuel Machado. In short, 'Ícaro' charts a poetic and musical journey through which an original narrative has been created in which love is celebrated in all its nuances. The recorded repertoire is arranged in sections according to the mythical legend of Icarus ('Wax Wings', 'Icarus', 'The Sun', 'The Flight', 'The Fall'), which refer to the varied metaphors and meanings of love in the Hispanic Baroque. The album is part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) collection Poetic Music.
